Brian Harman brands Open Championship fans 'brutal' as he bites back at Hoylake haters

New Open champion Brian Harman has branded the spectators who witnessed his Royal Liverpool glory "brutal".

The little-known American lifted the Claret Jug on Sunday after blitzing a world-class field including the likes of Rory McIlory and John Rahm. Harman won The Open Championship by six shots but he wasn’t a popular winner, in part due to his confession he hunts animals back in the US.

Now, in an interview back in his homeland on the Dan Patrick Show, the 36-year-old has let rip at the fans at Hoylake, claiming they don’t like underdogs. The golfer nicknamed The Butcher said: “They don’t care for an underdog over there I suppose. It was brutal man. I’ve always appreciated the fans there cause they’re very knowledgeable, they know when to clap, they know the game. Guys like me I can can go to Tour events in the US and a lot of people have no idea who I am and that’s totally fine.

"But over there they cover golf a little bit differently and so I’ve always appreciated their knowledge of the game but boy, did they not want me to win that golf tournament!”
