Brendan Rodgers has Celtic transfer tricks up sleeve and 23 days could prove he can slay Champions League giants - Keith Jackson

It's seven weeks and one day since Brendan Rodgers made his second coming at Celtic official.

And yet, somewhat curiously, it still feels as if the returning Parkhead boss has still to really get started. Yes, his side is already exactly where he left it four years ago, perched back on top of the Premiership table just one game into the new campaign. And, granted, Rodgers made a statement or two at lunchtime on Saturday when he sent his team out for the first time to face Ross County, with David Turnbull claiming a starring role after spending the last two seasons as a largely forgotten man on the fringes of Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI.

As a matter of fact, Turnbull’s surprise promotion - at the expense of Reo Hatate - did feel very much as if Rodgers was sending out a message. There’s a new sheriff in town. You might not like it but you sure as hell had better get used to it. That Turnbull bagged two goals in an otherwise unremarkable, fairly routine opening day win just went to show Rodgers hasn’t lost any of his old managerial magic dust.

In fact, it would come as no surprise at all if Turnbull goes on from here to have his Celtic career completely reinvigorated, just as Rodgers did previously for the likes of Scott Brown, Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic, Ryan Christie, James Forrest and Stuart Armstrong. At various points, each of them was given the Rodgers treatment when it seemed more likely that their time might be nearing an end.

Brown went on to cement his status as a living legend, Forrest has just received a testimonial as one of the most decorated players in the club’s history and McGregor has captained the club to five trophies out of the last six. So it stands to reason then that Turnbull might be starting
