BREAKING: Person dies after being hit by a train in Greater Manchester with services cancelled

A person has tragically died after being hit by a train near a station in Stockport.

Emergency crews were called to the line near Middlewood railway station, in High Lane, at around 9.20am today (Thursday) 'following reports of a casualty on the tracks'.

Sadly, the person was pronounced dead on the scene. No further details about them have been released at this stage.

Their death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed to the coroner. The train line is currently blocked while emergency crews continue to respond.

All train services between from Hazel Grove to Buxton are currently cancelled. Northern services are affected on the route from Manchester Piccadilly to Buxton

National Rail said the closure is expected to be in place until at least lunchtime. Road replacement transport is being arranged for passsengers.

In a statement, a British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the line near Middlewood railway station at around 9.20am today (25 January) following reports of a casualty on the tracks .Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
