"The place I love has gone downhill": The Greater Manchester town that's been dubbed one of Britain's 'unhappiest'

A Greater Manchester town has been dubbed one of the unhappiest places to live in Britain.

Oldham came in at 13th when ranked in the the most miserable areas to live in the UK – making it the saddest borough in our county.

The figures were revealed in Rightmove’s latest Happy at Home index, which asked 26,000 residents how they feel about living in their area.

Rating the happiest places nationally, Richmond upon Thames in southwest London came out on top while Hillingdon in west London was right at the other end of the cheery scale.

In Greater Manchester, Altrincham topped the charts as the most joyful followed by Bury and Stockport.

The results showed the most important contributors towards happiness were a feeling of pride, belonging and community.

Access to green space and nature was also important to those analysed, with those living in a rural area near a national park more likely to feel happier about where they live.

Ranking the happiest places across the north west of England, Oldham came last at 25th while Kendal came first. Nationally, Oldham came 206th.

Despite an ongoing regeneration project in the town to revamp Spindles Shopping Centre, create a new indoor market and build thousands of new homes in the centre, residents who spoke to the M.E.N say they aren’t shocked by the findings.

“It’s a grim town, really,” Shaw resident Jack Godfrey, 87, told the Manchester Evening News.

“It’s a working-class town, it always has been, but people used to have more affinity with the place. We live in Shaw and going into Oldham is a taboo. We go to Bury, people go straight to Manchester.
