BREAKING: M62 closed after serious crash with long delays - latest updates

A section of the M62 in Greater Manchester has been closed following a serious crash. National Highways says traffic has been brought to a halt on the M62 westbound between junctions 21 and 20, near Rochdale.

Drivers are warned to expect disruption this afternoon (August 2). There is queueing traffic approaching the scene, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system.

A spokesperson for National Highways North West wrote on Twitter: "Traffic is stopped on the #M62 westbound between J21 and J20 near #Rochdale following a collision. @manchesterfire on scene.

"Delays are building, approx. 3 miles of congestion. We'll keep you updated."

In an update at 3pm, they said the westbound carriageway had been fully shut following the 'serious' crash.

Further details about the nature of the incident are yet to be confirmed. Emergency services have been approached for information.

North West Motorway Police has confirmed patrols are at the scene.

One lane has also now been closed on the eastbound carriageway, in addition to the closure on the westbound side.

The road has now been closed following the crash.
