BREAKING: A579 Bolton Road closed due to 'police incident' - latest updates

A stretch of the A579 Bolton Road in Atherton has been closed due to what is being described as a "police incident". The A-road is closed in both directions from Douglas Street to Marlborough Road.

Google Maps showed slow moving traffic in the area - located close to Atherton train station - at around 1am on Tuesday. The nature of the so-called police incident is not yet known.

An update from road and traffic monitoring service Inrix at 1.05am said: "A579 Bolton Road in both directions closed due to police incident from Douglas Street to Marlborough Road."

In a tweet shortly after 1.40am, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said Bolton Road was closed in both directions between Marlborough Rd and Upton Rd - and said that local bus services "may be affected in the morning".
