Bradley Dack scored the only goal as Gillingham beat Walsall 1-0 at Priestfield in League 2 on Saturday

Bradley Dack says a full pre-season has left him fitter, sharper and ready to make a big impact for Gillingham in League 2 this season.

The attacking midfielder struck the only goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Walsall at Priestfield, securing the Gills’ first victory of the new campaign.

Dack said: “I think you can see that (after a full pre-season) I feel a lot sharper, a lot fitter. I can get around the pitch.

“Just having a pre-season makes your body a bit more robust. Touchwood, that carries on.

“I'm still managing loads with (fitness coach) James Russell and always having conversations with the manager about how I'm feeling.

“At the minute, I'm feeling really good, and it's nice to be amongst the goals.

“I knew if I got a pre-season and got my body in a place to play football matches, I could affect this league. Hopefully, I can carry on doing that.

“But I want what's best for the club. All the staff and the players have bought into what the manager wants. The club's definitely in a good place right now.”

Dack, 31, struggled with persistent injury problems last season after his return to the club. He didn’t make his first league appearance until late in September of the past campaign.

He finished the season looking more like himself, scoring the only goal against MK Dons in April to secure a first win for boss Gareth Ainsworth and signed a new one-year deal in the summer.

Dack’s had the benefit of a full pre-season now and has already made an impact.
