Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth says their unbeaten start to the season could make it harder to make a signing on transfer deadline day
Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth has admitted their impressive start to the season could hinder their hopes of making a deadline-day signing.
The Gills sit top of League 2 with four wins and two draws from their first six games but Ainsworth is still keen to add to his squad.
It’s attractive for any player to move to Priestfield with the club top of the table, although with his players already performing to a high level any incomers will have to break into the starting XI.
Asked if Gillingham’s unbeaten start makes it easier to attract the players he wants, Ainsworth responded: “I'll tell you on Monday.
“Yes, it's good. But it also says that maybe we don't need to make any wholesale changes. We've got a good group.
“Obviously, it's tough because when you sign players, they want to come to play, but nobody's done anything wrong who's played now to be out of the side.
“So, it's a balancing act. I think we need one more, numbers-wise, just to make sure that I'm covered in all areas and that's what I want to do.
“They will hopefully look at the league and go, ‘Gillingham look like they're doing okay and it looks like a good place to be right now’. So, hopefully we can get some over the line. But if we don't, I'm really happy with what we've got.”
Ainsworth is pleased with the quality of youth team players coming through but he knows senior experience is key in League 2 to balance the squad.
Clubs have until 7pm on Monday to make any permanent transfers.
“Dipping into the youth team is great,” added the Gills boss. “It's great for Joe Dunne, who does a fantastic job with those boys. It's also great for Gillingham as a whole, with Sam Gale, Joe Gbode, Cruz Beszant, Stan Sargent came on in the Cup game.
