Boyhood Son Finlay Gray says he trusted his gut to sign new Dumbarton deal

Boyhood Son Finlay Gray says he trusted his gut instinct to sign a new contract with Dumbarton.

The midfielder, 22, has caught the eye at Castle Road since signing from Broomhill in the summer of 2022 - but turned down a host of offers from elsewhere, to commit his future to the club he grew up supporting.

And the Cardross man says it was advice from his mum that convinced him to remain in G82.

Finlay told the Lennox: “After the season I took some time away, went on a wee holiday to think about things.

“I spoke to the gaffer and other boys from the team. But I think that my mind was already made up before I even met the gaffer.

“My mum said to me to go with my gut. I think that’s the best advice I got, because I did, and I’m happy here. So why would I not stay?

“Getting to play in League One made it a bit of a no-brainer. Especially when I know that the gaffer trusts me. I know I’ll have a chance to play against better teams, better players and challenge myself.

“I don’t have to prove anything to a whole new team and new management team.

“You want to be somewhere the fans hold you in such high regard. As a player you don’t want to go somewhere fans are distasteful towards you.

“I know that the fans will always have my back, through thick and thin, which is ideal.

“I’ve loved every minute at the club. There’s not been a single time, even after work, where I’ve thought training will be a drag. I’m looking forward to it every time.”

Finlay’s new deal came at the end of a good week for the Sons; which saw striker Michael Ruth extend his deal with the club, versatile wide-man Matty Shiels return after a spell with Cove Rangers and explosive winger Kalvin Orsi commit for a fourth season at The Rock.
