Bolton protests LIVE: Bottles and 'missiles' thrown as town centre demonstration turns angry

There is a large police presence in Bolton this afternoon ahead of two planned protests.

Details of a demonstration, advertised as a peaceful protest and believed to be titled 'Enough is Enough: Stand up for Country', have been widely shared on social media, including by the activist Tommy Robinson.

A counter-protest is also due to take place. Some members of this group have already begun to gather in Victoria Square outside the town hall. One banner already erected says 'Bolton united for peace.'

Metal fencing has been put in place around the square, which appears to have been segregated. There are a number of police, including mounted officers, already in position. A number of shops also appear to have their shutters down.

Two more orders which grant police extra powers have been authorised and put in place in Bolton.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say a Section 60 and a Section 60 AA order are now in force.

A Section 60 order gives officers more powers to stop and search people, within a defined area and specific timeframe. Section 60AA gives them power to require people to remove face coverings.

These are now in force until 10pm and in an area (shown on the below map) covering most of the town
