Bologna join Connor Barron transfer race as Aberdeen FC ace sees Champions League door open

Bologna have joined the growing list of Italian clubs who are weighing up a summer move for Aberdeen’s Connor Barron.

The Italian side signed Lewis Ferguson from the Dons two seasons ago and are now considering another Pittodrie raid. Record Sport understands Bologna have had scouts at a number of Aberdeen’s recent games, including their Scottish Cup semi-final penalty defeat to Celtic. They are aware that Barron is out of contract at the end of the season and could be signed for just over £500,000 in training compensation.

Fellow Italian sides Cagliari and Sassuolo have already declared an interest in the 21-year-old but any offers would be subject to them securing their top-flight survival. Bologna have had impressive feedback on the midfielder who has been a standout in the Reds’ recent revival. Rossoblu boss Thiago Motta has been linked with a summer move to Juventus but their staff are continuing to push ahead with their recruitment plans.

Bologna have already booked their place in next season’s Champions League and are looking to strengthen their squad to fight on all fronts. The Scottish market has already proved a fruitful one for Bologna. They bought Aaron Hickey from Hearts and sold him for big-money to Brentford.

Scotland star Ferguson was likely to make them major money in the transfer market this summer, as he was being tracked by the likes of Juventus, Inter and Napoli, before he suffered his ACL injury that has ruled him out for the rest of the year and Euro 2024. There is also expected to be a rule change in Italy next season that could see teams bring in another overseas player. Aberdeen have offered the Scotland U21 star a new deal but it is now looking increasingly likely that he will move on.
