Bevan French latest as Matt Peet provides update on Wigan Warriors star
Wigan have still not set a date for Bevan French's return to action, as Warriors head coach Matty Peet called on his squad to not overreact whatever the outcome of his first match in charge this weekend.
French has remained in Australia over the off-season following the death of his mother, but he will return to the country this week. He is, however, not yet ready for selection for Wigan in Super League, with Peet confirming there are no timescales set yet.
"It's definitely too early to say - ask me when I've had a week with him," Peet said. "Not that we're expecting any shocks, as we've worked closely with him, but he had a couple of weeks where he hadn't done a lot so we'll put him through the checks and give you a better update after that."
There are no new fresh injury concerns for Wigan ahead of Friday's opener at Hull Kingston Rovers, with French and Ethan Havard the only players unavailable for selection.
The match marks Peet's first competitive fixture as a head coach, but he warned against a dramatic reaction whether the Warriors win or lose on Friday, pointing to how they started last season so well before fading away as proof there is no cause for over-reaction in the early stages of a league season.
"I know things are going to get real after Friday night but I'm quite stuck on the idea of not over-reacting one way or the other and coming in on Saturday and getting my work done.. but of course I'm excited," he said.
"I've told the players there's a chance it could go really well and it could go badly, but it'll likely be somewhere in between. It's about us not over-reacting at all.
"We won seven on the spin at the start of last season, don't forget.
But we've had a good pre-season, there will be a good group
