Ben McAdoo backtracks on Sam Darnold comment in Carolina Panthers press conference

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo backtracked on his comments about quarterback Sam Darnold in a press conference on Tuesday.

McAdoo is currently in his first few months on the job in Charlotte, having come over this summer after serving as a consultant with the Dallas Cowboys last season and the quarterbacks coach in Jacksonville before that.

This means that he is still getting used to the swing of things with the Panthers, and that includes working out who is going to be playing when the season starts in September.

One of the biggest questions at the moment is who will be under centre for the Panthers when the season kicks off.

The Panthers do have veteran signal-caller Darnold on their books having acquired him last season as well as P.J. Walker who will likely serve as backup, but they are likely going to need more bodies on board than just those two to get through the rigours of an NFL season.

And with Darnold not exactly being the cream of the crop when it comes to talent at the position, having posted a career record of 17 wins to 32 losses and completing just 59.9% of his passes, it’s not as if they are likely to make any major strides with him at quarterback.

This is why it was perhaps rather foolish of McAdoo, when speaking in a press conference ahead of the draft, that Darnold was going to be the starting quarterback:
