BBC Gavin and Stacey Sonia star teased big spoiler months before Christmas special - but nobody noticed

Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman hinted at her return as Sonia in the beloved BBC series during an interview, months before the Christmas special was broadcast.

Fans were taken aback when it was unveiled that Smithy, played by James Corden who is also a co-creator of the show, was set to marry Sonia instead of Nessa, Ruth Jones' character, following a cliffhanger proposal five years prior.

The secrecy around Laura's character Sonia coming back was intense, as even her own parents were kept in the dark until they saw her appear on screen on Christmas Day along with 12.5 million other viewers.

After the BBC special aired, Laura disclosed she was "hidden away" throughout filming and was even excluded from the cast party post-shoot to avoid any spoilers about her being a pivotal figure in the series finale, reports the Mirror.

However, Laura may have dropped a clue about her surprise comeback during an interview three months earlier with Country and Townhouse. While discussing her role in the ITV show Joan, and despite being under a non-disclosure agreement regarding her portrayal of Sonia, Laura hinted at having completed a project she "absolutely loved."

Answering a query about her current life, Laura remarked: "Life is pretty wonderful right now. I'm coming to the end of a job I have absolutely loved with a dream cast and crew, and I'm really trying to take it all in and appreciate every minute."

Laura excitedly shared a clip on Boxing Day, capturing the moment her parents saw her on screen in the final episode. Alongside the video, she penned: "The moment my family realise Sonia is ruining Christmas again...".
