Gavin and Stacey's Ruth Jones makes sweet gesture to include 'snubbed' star from cast celebrations

Gavin and Stacey enthusiasts were overjoyed on Christmas Day as they tuned in for the final chapter of the cherished BBC comedy. Despite the episode concluding with Smithy (James Corden) tying the knot with Nessa (Ruth Jones), the duo didn't start off together.

In an unexpected turn, it was Sonia (Laura Aikman) who was set to wed Smithy, with the finale centring around the lead-up to their nuptials. As Sonia's Bridezilla tendencies became apparent, it was evident she wasn't the one for Smithy.

Smithy himself came to this conclusion at the altar, deciding to leave his intended and dash after Nessa, with the wedding party following suit. Sonia's role in the finale caught viewers off guard since her only prior appearance was in a single episode back in 2019.

Discussing the secrecy surrounding her return to the show, actress Laura Aikman recounted the extreme measures taken by the cast and crew to keep her involvement under wraps during filming, reports the Mirror.

While on This Morning last Thursday, the actress shared with ITV's Craig Doyle and Sian Welby: "One night, we filmed the hen do in the hotel where the cast were staying.

"There was one night I was allowed to be in the same hotel as everyone else, but I wasn't allowed to leave my hotel room!"

Nonetheless, Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa and also co-writes the series, made sure Laura didn't feel excluded, taking a thoughtful step to include her in the festivities.

Laura shared: "Ruth had a little party for all of us in her room so we could all be together one time, which was really sweet."

As Craig chimed in to comment on how terrible Sonia was during her hen night in the Christmas special, Laura quickly concurred.
