BBC Doctor Who Christmas Special: What time it's on, cast and what it's about

Doctor Who returns for its first festive special in six years this Christmas. The Church on Ruby Road, which airs on December 25, sees Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.

Viewers were introduced to the new Doctor during the final episode of a trio of 60th anniversary specials which aired earlier this month. The Fourteenth Doctor, David Tenant, was attacked with an electric beam which allowed both him and the next Time Lord to co-exist.

Former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson will be introduced as new companion Ruby Sunday in the Christmas episode. The pair are in for a shock when they encounter a group of rowdy goblins.

Showrunner Russell T Davies will return to the helm once again. The episode's synopsis reads: "Long ago on Christmas Eve, a baby was abandoned in the snow. Today, Ruby Sunday meets the Doctor, stolen babies, goblins and perhaps the secret of her birth."

Joining The Doctor and Ruby Sunday for their latest adventure is It's A Sin and Afterlife star Michelle Greenidge as Carla Sunday, Ruby's adoptive mum.

Davina McCall is also part of the cast, as herself. The My Mum, Your Dad host previously provided her voice as Davinadroid in the 2005 Doctor Who television story Bad Wolf. It's not yet clear how exactly Davina will fit into the plot this time around.

Anita Dobson plays Mrs Flood, Ruby's next door neighbour. The actress is best known for playing Angie Watts in the long-running soap EastEnders.
