Bayelsa Queens beat Rivers Angels to women’s title

Bayelsa Queens FC

True to their pre-match boast, Bayelsa Queens FC of Yenagoa, yesterday, emerged champions of the 2023 Federation Cup by beating their arch-rivals, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt, 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 scoreline at regulation time at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba,

Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels are the only teams to have represented Nigeria in the relatively new CAF Women’s Champions League competition. But yesterday, the Yenagoa-based Bayelsa Queens had the upper hand after an interesting 120 minutes of play.

Two weeks ago, at the same venue, Bayelsa Queens defeated Rivers Angels 1-0 in their final group A game during the NWFL Super Six contest, a defeat the girls from Port Harcourt could not avenge yesterday.

It is back-to-back victory for the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League Bronze winners, who marginally failed to defend their 2023 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) crown.

The Federation Cup final yesterday in Asaba was the fourth meeting between Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels this year.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa and NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, were among the dignitaries that cheered the teams yesterday.
