Bath City 2 Maidstone United 3 National League South match report: Stones miss out on play-off place on goal difference despite comeback win in George Elokobi’s final match

Maidstone United missed out on a National League South play-off place on goal difference despite a stirring fightback at Bath.

They battled back from two goals down to win 3-2 thanks to Jamie Yila, George Fowler and an injury-time strike from Mark Boruk in a crowded goalmouth.

But they were pipped to a top-seven finish after Maidenhead took a point at Hornchurch as George Elokobi signed off as United manager after three years in charge.

Maidstone needed to win at Twerton Park and hope other results went their way.

But hopes of doing their part of the bargain were hit in just the second minute as relegated Bath took the lead.

The Romans had already threatened with Brad Ash testing Lenny Holden after a smart turn in the box.

Seconds later, a Joe Raynes long throw was partially cleared and Scott Wilson fired home into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Maidstone responded well to the setback with Riley Court - who had a dislocated finger popped back in - full of running and forcing a decent save from Charlie Binns at his near post after good work by Hamzad Kargbo.

Donovan Wilson threatened for City when found by Scott Wilson but the visitors were largely on top without really looking like scoring.

Kargbo got under a header from a John Gilbert cross - probably the visitors’ best chance - and Jephte Tanga had a strike parried after a terrific run down the left.

Just as results elsewhere were going their way, with Ebbsfleet and Weston both losing, Maidstone fell two behind in the 43rd minute.

Alex Fisher went through on goal from Matt Bowman’s pass and while Holden was off his line sharply to make the save, the loose ball was thumped home by Wilson for his second.

Court fired wide after his initial effort was blocked
