Barry Bannan deserves Sheffield Wednesday reward to match legend status

It is six years to the day since Sheffield Wednesday agonisingly missed out on a Premier League return. The Owls were 90 minutes away from the promised land and ending their long top-flight exile.

But it was not to be for Carlos Carvalhal's side in the showpiece Wembley fixture. Bar Keiren Westwood, Wednesday failed to turn up and Mohamed Diame's stunning second half strike killed off their promotion dream.

"You have got to give great credit to Hull," Owls midfielder Barry Bannan later acknowledged in an interview with Yorkshire Live. "I think they showed us massive respect and they had a good plan. It worked for them that day.

"Hull had a good team. They had players like Andy Robertson, Robert Snodgrass, Tom Huddlestone and Michael Dawson. They had players with Premier League experience.

"I think we maybe lacked the experience Hull had. They had been there and done it.

"I don't think they were a better footballing team than us. They just knew how to deal with the occasion and managed it better."

Over 40,000 Wednesdayites travelled to the capital to roar on the Owls. They sang their hearts out and left a lasting impression on the occasion.

Bannan said: "It was an amazing day and will live with me for the rest of my life in a good and bad way. The turn out was unbelievable from our fans. They were brilliant.

"We didn't get the result we wanted but I just remember the stadium being blue and white. The support we received that day was the best support I have seen in my career from teams that I have been at.
