Barnsley and Peterborough join Luton in transfer chase for Ipswich Town player
Ipswich Town youngster Tyreece Simpson is being eyed up by both Peterborough United and Barnsley ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report from TWTD.
The 20-year-old is set to depart the Tractor Boys this summer, with Town boss Kieran McKenna revealing the striker’s desire to leave the club after contract talks broke down.
Simpson, who had made seven senior appearances for the club before the start of the 2021-22 season, spent the first half of the campaign on loan at League Two side Swindon Town, where he scored 11 times in 30 matches.
Despite being recalled by Ipswich during the January transfer window, Simpson was kept in the club’s under-23 squad and has not been able to add to his senior outings, not even making a matchday squad this season in League One.
Ipswich are set to trigger the one-year extension in Simpson’s contract, but they will allow the powerful forward to leave providing they receive an acceptable fee for his services.
Promotion-chasing Luton Town have previously been credited with an interest and could return for Simpson in the summer, whilst Barnsley and Posh are new names to add to the race.
Both clubs have been relegated to League One for the 2022-23 campaign but are interested in adding Simpson to their striking options, with the player himself set to face Posh on Friday afternoon for Ipswich’s under-23’s.
The Verdict
Simpson is clearly unhappy at the way things have gone in the second half of the season at Ipswich – perhaps he thought McKenna would give him an opportunity due to his recall.
That appears to be why he wants to move on and why contract negotiations have broken down, and there’s no point keeping a player that is clearly unhappy with his situation.
