Barcelona and Madrid light fresh Super League fire as court ruling puts UEFA on alert ahead of December D-day

Barcelona and Real Madrid have won a key battle in their fight to keep the European Super League alive - and FIFA and UEFA now face an anxious wait ahead of a major ruling in December.

The La Liga clubs are the only two yet to formally withdraw their support for the controversial breakaway league which has been firmly opposed across Europe. Juventus were the last of the 13 other clubs - including Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham from England - to pull out. But Barca and Real - whose president Florentino Perez has led the charge - still hope to keep it alive, albeit in a heavily altered format to the one that was quickly torpedoed in 2021.

The widespread withdrawal from invited clubs came after UEFA and FIFA both threatened heavy sanctions against any club who took part. The Super League and its backers A22 argued they were breaking competition law by doing so and a final decision from the European Court of Justice was expected in the spring but didn't arrive.

It's now been revealed that it will come on December 21 this year with Super League detractors hoping that will spell the end for the controversial competition. Barca and Real though, are pushing ahead in their fight to keep it on the table and they won a major court battle against La Liga this week.

According to Marca, they complained against the league who punished them for the Super League fiasco by withdrawing their share of certain audiovisual rights - effectively denying them a portion of certain league TV and radio revenues. But it's been ruled by the Court of First Instance Number 14 in Madrid that the league were wrong in doing so and declared their decision null and void.
