Watch Brendan Rodgers Celtic press conference in full as plaudits after Champions League pain no use to him

Brendan Rodgers has no interest in getting condolences after another Champions League defeat.

The Celtic boss is still searching for his first points of the group stage campaign after two losses in their opening two games against Feyenoord and Lazio. The manner of the defeat to the Italians was particularly gut-wrenching, with Pedro heading a 96th minute winner after Luis Palma had seen a goal ruled out by VAR.

But plaudits for performances are of no use in the quest to still be in Europe after Christmas. If they aren't in the knock-out stage of this competition, then it won't necessarily be used as a stick to beat Rodgers with, but the hope is that the Europa League is a realistic aim and will provide something to look forward to in early 2024. A win against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night would get them up and running, but Rodgers is well aware it can be a cruel game at this level.

“Adversity is some of the best learning that you have and the pain of that, it was numbing at the end because we didn’t feel we deserved that," he said of the Lazio loss. "The supporters were great that evening, they would have seen everything that we were trying to do in the game.

“I don’t want to be taking condolences after losing games of football but I respect the level that we're at. It’s up to us to see if we can be more progressive in our results to try and push forward.”
