'Bang average' - Pundit raises concerns over Sheffield Wednesday's promotion credentials

Adrian Clarke has delivered his verdict on Sheffield Wednesday's promotion push. The Owls look well-placed to secure a play-off spot with six matches left to go of the league season.

Lee Gregory scored for the second match running to help Wednesday beat AFC Wimbledon last time out and lift the club up to fifth in the standings. The striker headed home deep into added on time after a fine knock down from Callum Paterson to send Hillsborough into raptures.

The Owls boast the best home record in the division but have struggled for consistency on the road. They have won just six of their 19 away fixtures. Four out of the Owls' final six matches are away from S6, starting with Saturday's trip to Bolton Wanderers.

Darren Moore sends strong message to Sheffield Wednesday squad as player nears first-team return

Speaking on The Totally Football League Show this week, former Arsenal and Southend United winger Clarke said: “They look fit and they look capable. Gregory coming back into goal-scoring form makes a big difference.

“In the play-offs though, there is a slight concern over them because they’re only in the mix because of what they do at Hillsborough. Away from home, bang average really, they’re actually ranked tenth in the away team table."

The play-off picture could take a fresh twist this evening, with a number of Wednesday's promotion rivals in action. The Owls are three points clear of seventh-placed Oxford United, who go to Morecambe tonight. Wigan Athletic entertain Accrington Stanley, Milton Keynes Dons face bottom-of-the-table Crewe Alexandra and Wycombe Wanderers head to Cambridge United.
