Bahrain GP: Double Red Bull retirement sets up dramatic finish to opening F1 race - video

The Bahrain Grand Prix proved one to forget for Red Bull as both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were struck with similar issues to force them to retire from the race in the closing stages.

The opening race of the season certainly offered up plenty of drama late on, as what looked set to be a strong points finish for the Bulls ended up being a nightmare weekend.

First, Max Verstappen, already suffering with power steering issues, started slowing to a crawl following a late Safety Car period, with the field streaming past him – setting up a Ferrari one-two in the process as Carlos Sainz followed Charles Leclerc – before Sergio Perez suffered the same fate.

Dr Helmut Marko said after the race that not getting enough fuel to the engine was the issue in both cars and so, obviously, the team is going to be investigating that thoroughly to identify the issue and then seeking to ensure it never happens again.

Certainly, it proved a dramatic finish to the race as both Red Bull cars dropped out within a matter of laps of one another, paving the way, as mentioned, for a Ferrari one-two and for an unlikely podium finish for Lewis Hamilton who, at the start of the weekend, had already gone on record to say that his Mercedes car is not currently at the performance of the Ferrari and Red Bull.

Hamilton’s gain was Perez’s loss, of course, and Sky have shared the dramatic final moments on social media to be watched again.

Have a look at it now:

The moment Sergio Perez spun to gift Lewis Hamilton a podium position!
