Bafana boss Broos apologises for PSL quality rant: 'This was not my intention'

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has sensationally apologised for comments he made during a press conference last week.

The 70-year-old, along with his technical staff, returned to South Africa following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Morocco in Bafana's opening 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Speaking at SAFA House last Tuesday, the Bafana mentor went as far as saying that South Africa does not produce "quality players", while also adding that the level of the PSL was "not high enough".

Broos' remarks struck a nerve but also divided a nation as South African soccer fans, including Mamelodi Sundowns striker Kermit Erasmus and senior coach Steve Komphela, shared their views on the comments made by the Belgian.

The Bafana boss began to trend on Twitter as short video clips of his exact words made the rounds.

On Saturday, Broos attended the extra-ordinary congress and addressed the South African Football Association (SAFA) leadership.

"We have to make SA football better, we have to make it more professional - and I am just talking out of my experiences that I have," Broos said, as quoted by the SABC.

"I am European and in Europe things are different than here in Africa. But I also have the African experience, I worked two years in Cameroon and when I compare this country with Cameroon - the potential is 10 times more.

"And therefore, it's a pity that SA is not by the best teams in Africa and I think this is something we have to achieve in the next years."

Broos added: "I want to apologise if my declaration in the press conference last Tuesday was disrespectful against this nation.

"This was not my intention, certainly not. I came here one year ago and the only thing I want is for SA football to become better.
