'Bad news for Celtic!' Paul Merson in Rangers transfer statement as Aaron Ramsey snubs Aston Villa

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson says Aaron Ramsey's potential move to Rangers will spell 'bad news' for Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Ramsey is set to sign for the Scottish champions following an eventful deadline day, after reportedly turning down an approach from Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa.

Our colleagues in Scotland claim the player and his representatives are currently in Glasgow ahead of a proposed loan move to Ibrox, which would also include an option to buy at the end of the season .

Ramsey's future at current side Juventus has been the subject of speculation for some time, with a host of clubs linked with a possible move this month.

Newcastle United, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Wolves are among the names to have been mentioned, while Italian outlet Sport Mediaset has also claimed that Villa, headed up by former Gers' boss Gerrard, were also keen admirers.

However, it seems Rangers have now won the race, and Merson believes it represents something of a coup for the Ibrox outfit.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: “It’s brilliant for Rangers, absolutely brilliant news. Bad news for Celtic.

“It just shows you how much those two teams have come on and how big they are that Aaron Ramsey at Juventus would go to Glasgow Rangers.

“[His time in Italy has been] disappointing. He got behind the eight ball early doors, got an injury.

“I just think when you get a move, you need to start well at a big, big club like that and it didn’t work out for him. He hasn’t had the opportunities he’d have wanted.

“But I’m very shocked there aren't a lot of Premier League clubs in for him. Very shocked.

“He’s a player who scores goals from midfield. A good player. I’m pretty shocked that there’s not more clubs in for Aaron Ramsey.
