Rangers chief gives contract update amid Aston Villa transfer links
Reported Aston Villa transfer target Connor Goldson could leave Rangers on a free transfer this summer as talks over renewing his contract at Ibrox continue.
The centre-back position was one that Villa boss Steven Gerrard was desperate to add support to in January following Axel Tuanzebe's decision to cut short his third loan stint at the club.
Amongst other centre-backs, Rangers' Goldson was linked with a reunion with Gerrard at Villa Park, but it was former Arsenal defender Calum Chambers who joined the club before deadline day.
Gerrard could be intersted in further strengthening the his defensive ranks in the summer and could swoop for Goldson if he fails to pen fresh terms at Rangers.
Goldson has started all but one of the Scottish side’s Premiership games so far this season and has worn the captain’s armband in both the Scottish League Cup and Europa League qualifying.
Giving an update on the player’s future, Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson has revealed that ‘regular conversations’ are going on between the player and the club who are not yet resigned to losing him.
“The focus has all been on the last dozen football games, European games, and Scottish Cup. We're not resigned to losing him,” he told Sky Sports .
“I know Ross (Wilson) (Rangers’ sporting director) is having regular conversations with all the players whose contracts are expiring in the summer and that's something that will be addressed in the coming months.
“I'm quite philosophical about how these things work. Players come in and sign a contract and they've committed for that time. If they serve their time and that's what the club has signed up to as well then that's fine. If someone leaves prior to their contract expiring and we get
