Aston Villa 'working on deal' for 42-cap star 'right now' at Villa Park

Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Southampton star Jan Bednarek as a deal is ‘being worked on right now’ at Villa Park, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Midlands giants have lost three of their opening four Premier League fixtures this season, but head coach Steven Gerrard could strengthen his squad ahead of Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

It is understood that Villa are in talks with Southampton over negotiating the season-long loan of Bednarek.

Gerrard is seeking fresh options at the heart of his defence after Diego Carlos, who only joined in a £26million move from La Liga giants Sevilla earlier in the transfer window, ruptured his Achilles’ tendon earlier this month.

According to The Athletic, sourcing a replacement for the Brazilian is a priority ahead of the fast-approaching deadline and a deal for Bednarek is being worked on.

The report suggests discussions over a move for the 42-cap Poland international are at an advanced stage and Villa hold the edge over West Ham United and Leicester City, who have also shown an interest.

Bednarek, whose £60,000-per-week Southampton contract still has close to three years to run, has already made three appearances since the season got underway.

Jones understands that Villa are locked in discussions over Bednarek and his arrival in the Midlands is expected.

However, the journalist believes Gerrard may need to add another centre-half to his squad if he wants to make his side even more solid at the back.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “A move for Bednarek is being stepped up, so we’ll soon find out whether that comes through. I think it probably will, to be honest. It’s certainly being worked on right now.

“Is that enough? I’m not totally sure, to be honest with you.
