Aston Villa: 50 y/o title winner 'would seriously think about' job at Villa Park

Aston Villa could make an eye-catching appointment if Steven Gerrard is sacked as Mauricio Pochettino ‘would have to seriously think about’ taking over at Villa Park, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Midlands giants spent more than £60million on bolstering Gerrard’s squad during the summer transfer window, but performances and results have been underwhelming.

Speaking on the Overlap Review, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein revealed Pochettino ‘would consider’ taking charge of a club outside of the Premier League’s top six if he perceived it to be the ‘right project’.

Ornstein also claimed the ambition of Villa’s owners, along with the fact they have won numerous trophies over the years, would result in the Argentinian being unwilling to discount a move to the Midlands.

Pochettino has been without a job since he was sacked by French giants Paris Saint-Germain, fresh from winning the Ligue 1 title, during the summer.

It is understood that the 50-year-old was under consideration to take over at Chelsea after the west Londoners sacked Thomas Tuchel last week.

However, the Blues ended up heading to Brighton & Hove Albion and taking Graham Potter off their hands instead of going for Pochettino, who has previously managed Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the Premier League.

Jones believes Pochettino is receptive to offers and would consider his options if Villa were to put forward the idea of replacing Gerrard in the dugout.

The journalist feels the lack of vacancies, along with their impressive history and backing, could play into the Midlands club’s hands if they look to persuade the ex-Espanyol chief into signing on the dotted line.
