Aston Villa transfer news: Robin Olsen learns transfer fate with decision on permanent move expected soon

Aston Villa are about to exercise their option to buy backup goalkeeper Robin Olsen on a permanent basis from AS Roma, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Olsen joined Aston Villa on loan from the Serie A side in January. It followed a similar spell at Sheffield United in the first half of the season, and one with Everton the year before.

In the end, he only made one appearance for Aston Villa. It came on the final day of the Premier League season, when he conceded three goals to Manchester City.

However, Steven Gerrard must have been impressed by Olsen behind the scenes. According to Romano, Villa are now ready to activate their option to buy Olsen.

They will pay Roma €3.5m (nearly £3m) to attain Olsen’s services on a contract of their own. There is no information provided on the length of any deal he may sign.

The Sweden international would then continue to deputise for Emiliano Martinez, who missed the Man City game due to a knee injury.

Martinez has denied that issue will be a long-term one and is ready to report back for pre-season in July. By then, he could be joined by Olsen again.

It would bring an end to four years under contract with Roma, who only used Olsen in the first of those seasons. They signed him as a replacement for Alisson Becker, but he was nowhere near the standard of the Liverpool man.

Olsen has been out on loan at various clubs ever since. Former Wolves man Rui Patricio has instead lived up to the task of being Roma’s number one.

He will be joined by a new backup keeper, Mile Svilar, in the summer. As such, Roma still have no use for Olsen.

Now, Villa may be the destination where he finally settles.
