Aston Villa transfer blow as club decide 'not' to complete deal

Aston Villa striker Wesley Moraes will reportedly be returning to Villa Park in the summer.

Wesley is currently out on loan at Brazilian side Internacional and it is not going well for the 25 year-old. After netting on debut at the end of January, Wesley has not scored since with only three starts from a possible six coming so far.

Wesley joined Internacional at the turn of the year having ended his loan spell with former team Club Brugge. It has been a torrid time at Villa for Wesley, who joined from Brugge for what was a club-record fee of £22 million in June 2019.

Just as he was getting to grips with the Premier League, Wesley suffered a severe knee injury in January 2020 that sidelined him for more than a year. In pre-season he was given a red card in a friendly with Stoke City and it was decided that a move to Brugge would be the best option for all parties.

He could not get going in Belgium and made only three League appearances for a team that he scored 17 goals for in the campaign before Villa signed him. Journalist Ekrem Konur reports that Internacional will not move to sign Wesley at the end of the season in a blow for Villa, who are well-stocked in attack without the player.

Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins are Steven Gerrard 's first-choice duo up front with Cameron Archer, on loan at Preston North End and scoring goals in the Championship, set to be given a chance to prove his worth in the Premier League in the summer. Wesley is on a big contract that is set to last until the end of the 2023-24 season and Villa will look to shift the Brazil international, with a big hit on the fee they paid out for him expected.
