Aston Villa set for big profit as West Ham plot move for England striker Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa could make a serious profit on England striker Ollie Watkins as a report claims West Ham are hoping to sign him this summer.

Watkins came through the ranks at Exeter City and made 78 appearances for the club before joining Brentford in July 2017. He went on to score 49 goals in 143 matches for the Bees, helping them to reach the play-off final in 2019-20, where they lost to Fulham.

Brentford sold Watkins that summer as Aston Villa agreed to pay £28million for his services. That saw the Midlands outfit break their club record transfer fee, although it has since been increased by the capture of Emi Buendia.

Watkins hit 16 goals in 40 matches for Villa during 2020-21, making it a successful first season in the Premier League for him.

The 26-year-old will have to end the current campaign in deadly form if he wants to match that figure. His record stands at 10 goals from 32 outings so far, with four games left to play.

Watkins, now a seven-cap England international, is becoming a reliable attacker at Premier League level. Despite this, reports suggest Steven Gerrard could sanction an exit in the summer.

This is where West Ham come in. According to The Guardian, David Moyes is desperate to bring in a new striker at the end of the season and Watkins is a perfect solution.
