Aston Villa: Gerrard tipped to make 'really significant' signing this summer

Aston Villa could sign a top-class striker this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

With the off-season now just two months away, Jones has hinted that Villa are already thinking about who they could entice to the club ahead of their next campaign.

Steven Gerrard currently has two England internationals to call upon to lead the line in the shape of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings.

Watkins netted 14 league goals in his first season at Villa last term, but he has found it more difficult this time around, scoring just eight top-flight goals.

Meanwhile, Ings joined from Southampton last summer, and started brightly by scoring in his opening two Premier League games.

However, he has only found the net on three occasions since then for the Midlands-based club.

Despite having two international forwards on their books, Jones feels Villa will want to bring in another striker this summer who could potentially push Watkins and Ings down the pecking order.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about the Premier League outfit potentially signing a new attacker, Jones said: “I think that they probably will land someone really significant in the summer.”

It could be argued that the club ought to prioritise strengthening a couple of different areas in their squad ahead of bringing in a new striker.

Outside of their first-choice midfield trio of Douglas Luiz, John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey, Villa do not seem to have much strength in depth in the middle of the park, particularly in terms of cover for Luiz in the holding role.
