Aston Villa: 'Fans would love' title-winner to replace Gerrard at Villa Park

Aston Villa supporters ‘would love’ Mauricio Pochettino to succeed Steven Gerrard in the Villa Park dugout, according to journalist Dean Jones.

While Gerrard is approaching a year in the hot seat, it appears there are doubts over his long-term future with the Midlands giants.

According to Football Insider, Pochettino is keen on the possibility of sealing his return to the Premier League by replacing Gerrard at the Villa helm.

The report suggests the former Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur chief, who was spotted watching England’s Nations League draw with Germany from the Wembley stands earlier this week, is not only interested in managing a club in the Champions League.

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, speaking on the Overlap Review, revealed Pochettino would not discount a move to Villa Park and it is understood that he is on a list of targets compiled by the Villa hierarchy in case they decide to sack Gerrard.

The 50-year-old was axed by French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and turned down the opportunity to return to Ligue 1 after snubbing an approach made by Nice earlier this month.

Pochettino was reportedly under consideration to take over at Chelsea after the capital club sacked Thomas Tuchel, but Graham Potter was appointed as the German’s successor instead.

Jones believes the Villa fanbase would welcome Pochettino replacing Gerrard in the hot seat as it would show the ambition of the hierarchy.

However, the journalist feels some supporters are doubtful over whether the Argentinian would be open to taking charge of a side which is only three points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone.
