Assist king speaks out as talk of a Man Utd offer for Leeds target swells
Spain Under-21 international Sergio Gomez who is developing a reputation as a creative force has spoken out on links to both Man Utd and Leeds Utd.
Gomez, 21, joined Anderlecht from Borussia Dortmund on a permanent deal last summer. That proved to be a stellar piece if business for Vincent Kompany’s side given the gaudy numbers Gomez has racked up this season.
Indeed, Gomez’s tally stands at six goals and 14 assists from 41 matches this year. What makes those numbers all the more impressive is the fact he plays at left-back.
One might think those figures are only so high given the comparatively weaker level of opposition he faces in Belgium.
However, on the international stage with Spain’s Under-21s, Gomez has fared even better. In his last seven matches at that level, Gomez has six goals and five assists.
TEAMtalk exclusively revealed he had emerged on Leeds Utd’s radar last week. The Whites gambled and lost when signing Junior Firpo last summer.
The ex-Barcelona full-back has struggled mightily this term and Gomez could be seen as a quick fix to their left-back woes.
However, links to Manchester United have also emerged. Gazzetta dello Sport reported the Red Devils had recently scouted the rising star during an Anderlecht fixture in the Jupiler Pro League.
Anderlecht-Online now take the story a step further, claiming interest from ‘foreign clubs’ is continuing to grow.
Leeds United and Man Utd are both namechecked, though they are joined by Serie A champions Inter Milan. The outlet adds United ‘should prepare an offer’, though whether they will, only time will tell.
The overseas interest has not escaped Gomez’s attention, and the Spaniard let his thoughts be known in a recent interview with Cadena Ser.
