Asda cordoned off as bomb squad scrambled over 'suspicious device'

Bomb disposal experts were scrambled to Longsight last night over reports of a 'suspicious device'.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a cordon in place around the Asda supermarket on Stanley Grove on Wednesday evening (July 25). All entrances were reportedly taped off.

Police officers and firefighters were spotted on the scene. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said officers received a report of a 'suspicious device' at around 10.30pm.

Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) experts were called. The bomb squad assessed and 'dismantled' the device.

It was found 'not to be viable, the GMP spokesperson added. The cordon around Asda was lifted after emergency crews left the area.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has also been contacted for further details.
