Arsenal transfer could solve Steven Gerrard's biggest Aston Villa problem

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Calum Chambers from Arsenal on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The arrival of Chambers could prove to be a very shrewd bit of business, as Villa could have just solved one of Steven Gerrard's greatest issues within his current squad.

Gerrard has been keen to increase the quality amongst his squad and simultaneously increase the competition for each position, which Chambers provides in an abundance.

As the graph shows below, Chambers is talented on both the defensive end and going forward when comparing him to full-backs across Europe's top five leagues. He averages just under five clearances, three blocks and three aerial duels won, therefore outlining his excellent reading of the game on the defensive end.

As well as being able to contribute going forward, if Gerrard does need to call upon the player, in a system that relies heavily on a degree of attacking output from the full-backs, he records over three progressive passes, three progressive carries and just under three passes to the final third each game. If Villa need to, they can rely on Chambers to contribute.

Chambers also possesses a high degree of versatility, with the player also being able to play at the centre-back position. Prior to his arrival, Villa only had Kortney Hause to call upon in the event of an injury to Ezri Konsa or Tyrone Mings. If they had further injuries, they would have had to rely on the likes of Joshua Feeney or Sil Swinkels from their academy.
