Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa tipped to complete 'top class' Liverpool transfer

Aston Villa have struggled defensively recently after shipping three to Leeds United at home and failing to shut out Newcastle United on Sunday.

Their recruitment was well-documented in January as several high-profile signings arrived at Bodymoor Heath.

The club will likely look to invest heavily again in the summer, with several other positions such as midfield and centre-back being touted as the areas needed.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Daily Mail's Tom Collomosse suggested Villa might make a move to upgrade their options at centre-back this summer, with Joe Gomez of Liverpool once again being linked.

He stated: "I think he looks like that ideal type of player to go into somewhere like Villa at the end of the season.

“They’re looking for a top class centre-back and although he’s still improving in some ways, Joe Gomez is an England international, Premier League champion and played in the best competitions.

“I think that’s definitely one to keep an eye on for the summer.”

The links to Liverpool through Steven Gerrard are obvious, with the Villa boss reportedly keen to make a move for the player in the January transfer window.

It has been a frustrating season for Gomez who has started just four games for Liverpool across all competitions. He also recently missed the FA Cup fixture against Cardiff City due to a positive COVID-19 test, which kept him out of training ahead of the Burnley fixture too.

It appears Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk are all ahead of the centre-back, who at 24 years of age is fast approaching his prime years as a professional.
