Arsenal suffer £12m windfall blow as Roma boss Jose Mourinho makes major transfer decision

AS Roma are unlikely to sign Arsenal loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles permanently this summer, according to recent reports.

The England international thrived during the early months of Mikel Arteta's tenure as Gunners boss before falling down the pecking order after admitting his desire to play in midfield. The Spaniard then allowed him to leave on loan during the January transfer window, with Maitland-Niles opting to head for Serie A outfit Roma.

However, he hasn't made the impact he planned for Jose Mourinho's side, featuring less than 400 minutes in the Italian top-flight, with the Giallorossi unlikely to bring him to the Stadio Olimpico on a permanent basis this summer, according to The Mirror. Their report claims that the 24-year-old is likely to come back to English football at the end of the current campaign.

Maitland-Niles, who is valued at £12million on Transfermarkt, will have just one year left on his contract at the Emirates Stadium once he returns to the club this summer and a departure is likely. Arteta admitted that the north Londoners let him leave during the winter window due to his demand for more game time.

Speaking earlier this year, Arteta said: "Ainsley came to me and explained the reasons why he thought the best thing for him in his career right now was to move away. He felt the opportunity to go to Rome and work with Jose was a good one.

"Being fair with the amount of minutes that he’s played he was entitled to that opportunity. We wish him the best."
