Arsenal: £75k-a-week star has 'no point to sulk' at the Emirates

Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney is ‘going to get opportunities’ to impress throughout the season, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 25-year-old was a surprise omission from Mikel Arteta’s starting lineup against Liverpool over the weekend following Oleksandr Zinchenko’s latest injury setback.

Tierney has only started three Premier League games so far this season after falling down Arteta’s pecking order due to the arrival of Zinchenko from Manchester City over the summer.

With the Ukraine international sidelined through a muscle problem, though, it seemed as though Tierney was set to feature from the off when Liverpool made the visit to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

However, Arteta instead decided to play versatile defender Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back in an attempt to handle the attacking threat posed by Mohamed Salah.

Tomiyasu is undoubtedly a talented player capable of playing anywhere along the back line, but he hadn’t started a top-flight fixture in 2022/23 prior to the Liverpool game and that was also only his fifth outing on the left-hand side in his entire career.

Jones doesn’t believe there is any point in Tierney ‘sulking’ over Arteta’s surprise choice to leave him out of the starting XI and has urged the Scotland international to make the most of any future opportunities.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “In terms of Tierney, there's no point in sulking over a moment like this.

“You're part of the squad, there's a long season, you're going to get opportunities, and when they come along, you've just got to make sure that you're noticed for the right reasons.”
