Arne Engels is Celtic 'top transfer priority' as Brendan Rodgers targets Bundesliga wonderkid

Celtic have reportedly made Belgian wonderkid Arne Engels a "top priority" in this summer's recruitment.

The 20-year-old currently plays for German side Augsburg but it is claimed that last season's double winners are looking to take him to Parkhead. A Belgium Under-21 international, Engels made the switch to the Bundesliga outfit from the Club Brugge youth academy when he signed a four-and-a-half yeard deal in January 2023.

But a report by footballtransfers.com states "Brendan Rodgers is keen to add further strength to his midfield and has targeted dynamic Augsburg midfielder Engels as a key addition to the team." Engels is described as a versatile player who started out as a defensive midfielder but can also play as a right back or right winger. He has already notched up 50 games in the German top flight, where he helped Augsburg finish in 11th place last season, and that caught the eye of Belgium national team boss Domenico Tedesco who invited him to train with the full Red Devils squad ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany.

Celtic will imminently announce the capture of Republic of Ireland striker Adam Idah who will join last season's fellow loan hero Paulo Bernardo and goalkeepers Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel in moving to the east end of Glasgow this summer. Engels is valued at between £6million and £9m and Bavarian outfit Augsburg are said to be keen to cash in on one of their prize assets.
