Annan Athletic record Premier Sports Cup penalty win over St Johnstone

Annan pulled off a sensational Premier Sports Cup win over Premiership side St Johnstone with a 5-4 penalty triumph.

And that means the Galabankies pocket the bonus point for the shootout following the victory after a goal less draw.

Sinning Saints had two players sent off during the 90 minutes with Dan Cleary dismissed in the first half for violent conduct and late on substitute Cammy McPherson also walked for a lunge on Aidan Smith with two minutes left.

The Black and Golds’ Josh Galloway netted the fifth penalty after keeper Greg Fleming stopped a Michael O’Halloran spot kick while Andy Considine blazed his effort for Saints over the bar.

Galloway had earlier struck a post with 10 minutes remaining.

Ironically, Saints had controlled the match until the red card for Cleary which incensed Saints manager Callum Davidson who said: “We gave a team an opportunity to get a result from our lack of discipline.

“I’m furious with it. I’m not accepting it.

“This is an important competition for us.”

Cleary was involved in an off-the-ball incident with Annan’s Tommy Goss just before the half hour mark which resulted in the Saint walking. Goss was booked for his part in the clash.

Next up for Annan is a home clash with Elgin City tomorrow and manager Peter Murphy will be confident after disposing of Queen of the South 3-2 last weekend in a thrilling derby before sinking top flight Saints in midweek.
