Angela Rayner: Two men charged in connection with malicious communications sent to Labour MP

Two men have been charged in connection to malicious communications sent to Labour MP Angela Rayner.

Police have been investigating reports of threatening and abusive phone calls and emails sent to a 41-year-old woman in Tameside.

Stuart Kelly, 53, of East Park Road, Halifax, and Michael McGrath, 71, of Silkstone Crescent, Sheffield, have both been charged with sending an offensive, indecent, obscene and/or mencancing message.

Mr Kelly has been charged in connection to telephone calls made to the woman on October 15, 2021.

Mr McGrath’s charge relates to an email sent to the same woman on October 16, 2021.

Both men have been bailed.

They are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on March 17.

Ms Rayner's office confirmed the charges were in connection to alleged calls and emails sent to the Ashton MP.

A spokesperson said: "We are working with the police to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice and Angela would like to thank the police for their work during these investigations.

"Abuse and threats of this nature don’t just have an impact on Angela but also on her family, her children and her staff, who are on the receiving end of these communications."
