Woman, 57, arrested over 'abusive emails' sent to Angela Rayner MP

A woman from Nottingham has been arrested over alleged abuse sent to Ashton-under-Lyne MP Angela Rayner.

It's part of an ongoing operation being carried out by Greater Manchester Police, targeting those who send abuse to Labour's deputy leader.

Officers from GMP and Nottinghamshire Police arrested a 57-year-old woman on suspicion of malicious communications at an address in the Hucknall area of Nottingham this morning (March 11).

The woman remains in custody for questioning, GMP says. The arrest is in connection with alleged abusive emails sent to Ms Rayner on Saturday, February 19.

It is the fifth arrest that GMP has made as part of the investigation into abuse targeting Ms Rayner.

GMP says three men have been previously charged as part of the probe - which is codenamed Operation Octant - while one man has been convicted. Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to come forward to GMP.

A spokesperson for Ms Rayner told the Manchester Evening News : "We are working with the police to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice and Angela would like to thank the police for their work during these investigations.

"Abuse and threats of this nature don’t just have an impact on Angela but also on her family, her children and her staff, who are on the receiving end of these communications.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 9262, via 101 or the LiveChat function at www.gmp.police.uk.

Alternatively details can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
