Ange Postecoglou 'wanted' for England job as ex Celtic boss a shock inclusion on 5-man shortlist

Ange Postecoglou is a shock genuine contender to replace Gareth Southgate as England boss.

The Australian impressed in his first season at Tottenham and his upwards trajectory in the UK continues after two successful seasons with Celtic. Spurs were in a mess when he took over but he steadied the ship and led them to fifth-place in the Premier League - narrowly missing out on the Champions League.

The English FA are on the lookout for their next boss and many contenders come within the Premier League - such as Newcastle's Eddie Howe. Out-of work Graham Potter is the favourite while Jurgen Klopp has been ruled out. But a surprise report from The Telegraph claims Spurs boss Postecoglou is viewed as a serious option. It's claimed he'd been tracked since before he moved to Celtic, all the way back to his days as Australia manager between 2013 and 2017.

It's believed they are happy to make an interim appointment in the meantime, likely to be current U21 boss Lee Carsley, and wait for the right candidate to become available. It remains to be seen whether Postecoglou would be open to leaving Spurs for a return to international management after a single season.

But he is being considered alongside Carsley, Potter, Howe and Mauricio Pochettino. The report further adds that they have no concerns about appointing a foreign manager and that wouldn't work against Postecoglou were he keen on landing the role.
