Andy Robertson reveals the banned Scotland dressing room phrase as Liverpool experience proves vital

The Tartan Army might be looking out the lederhosen for next summer already but Andy Robertson has banned any talk about Germany in the Scotland camp.

It’s a message that comes down from Steve Clarke and the skipper is one of the manager’s experienced henchmen – making sure there are no loose lips to sink ships with the big prize tantalisingly just over the horizon. Robertson knows we are close. But until Scotland’s passage to Euro 2024 is secured, he doesn’t want anyone in the group looking too far down the road. The national side has come too far in this section – with four wins our of four leading Spain and Norway playing catch up – to allow it to slip now.

Robertson said: “I can genuinely say we’re not spoken about next year Germany. We’ve got a pretty good manager for that. He doesn’t allow us to get too far ahead of ourselves. It’s also up to experienced lads like myself, McGinn, McGregor and people like that to make sure no one is discussing it. In fairness, no one has spoken about it. We’ve all been focused on this game.

“We know how good we felt after the summer camp and how confident we felt as a team. You need to back your own ability, but not be overconfident.”

Germany might be a word on the banned list but there is one that’s getting plenty of air time – complacency. Or, more importantly, trying to avoid it. Robertson said: “Of course. That is what all good teams do.

“I’ve been very lucky to be part of a good team at Liverpool and having no complacency is key. When you look at the lads who play for Celtic, Rangers, in the Premier League or competing for the Championship, you can’t let complacency set in.
