Andy Farrell optimistic on injuries after win over Italy

Andy Farrell says he doesn't believe the injuries picked up by Jack Conan, Jimmy O'Brien and Craig Casey are too serious, as Ireland got their Rugby World Cup warm-up campaign under way with a 33-17 win against Italy at the Aviva Stadium.

All three players departed the game in the 10 minutes either side of half time, with Conan seen wearing a protective boot on the sideline during the second half.

Ireland get their World Cup campaign under way against Romania in five weeks on Saturday 9 September, and although Farrell says they will be assessing the injuries further, he appeared confident the issues weren't long-term.

"They seem not too bad," Farrell said.

"Jimmy's shoulder has shut down a little bit, it's something he's had in the past. Jack has lost power in his foot, it seems OK. Craig had a tight back which led to a cramp in his hamstring."

The Ireland coach described the Irish performance as "clunky" at times, but the result was never really in doubt, with Ireland building up a 21-3 lead by half time.

Caelan Doris played a starring role at openside flanker, scoring two tries and contributing to Ireland's third, and adding to the performance on both sides of the ball with 12 carries and 11 tackles.

"I'm sick of him getting man of the match," Farrell laughed.

"He just keeps getting better and better; we all know he's good at jackalling and good over the ball and I'm not sure if he took that through the roof because he had number 7 on his back.
