Italy are due a Six Nations win soon, so the saying goes.
DUBLIN, Oct 21 : Ireland named the uncapped Ulster pair of Jamie Benson and James McNabney in a 36-man squad for next month's Nations Championship games, but are also missing injured personnel, including skipper Caelan Doris.
The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Although the absence of the captain Caelan Doris has been compounded by the injury sustained by Jack Conan last Saturday, Ireland will welcome back a trio of frontline players for the first time in almost a year – Andrew Porter, Ryan Baird and Mack Hansen – when Andy Farrell names his squad for the Nations Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
The sight of Jack Conan leaving the field at Clermont’s Stade Marcel-Michelin on Saturday afternoon could well open the door for Munster’s Brian Gleeson’s rising talent to be recognised with Ireland recognition this week.
Big picture. Seven tries, a bonus-point win in France, a dominant scrum and lineout, the constituent parts of a super pack performance, collectively and individually. Small picture. Leinster will reflect on untidy passages, lack of precision, some wayward passing and, at times, an absence of stickability in their first-up tackling.
Leo Cullen has named a completely changed Leinster starting XV for Saturday’s homecoming URC game at the Laya Arena against Cardiff (kick-off 7.45pm, live on TG4 and Premier Sports 1). Among them are 10 of Leinster’s 16 summer tourists with Ireland, all but one of whom will be making their seasonal reappearance.
Ireland suffered a crushing 40-21 defeat as New Zealand stretched their remarkable unbeaten run at Eden Park to 53 Test matches in round three of the inaugural Nations Championship.
As Andy Farrell rang the changes and brought back the A-listers for Saturday’s crunch Nations Championship Test against the All Blacks at Eden Park, the respected coach said Dave Rennie had re-established New Zealand's rugby "DNA" and brought back some "steel" to the three-time world champions.
Ireland are set to hand first caps to four players after coach Andy Farrell named his side to face Japan in their Nations Championship clash in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday, including a start for number eight Sean Jansen.
