Andriy Yarmolenko granted time away from West Ham during war in Ukraine

Andriy Yarmolenko will not feature when West Ham United host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday in the Premier League as he has been granted some time off due to the war in his homeland, Ukraine.

Hammers manager David Moyes confirmed that Yarmolenko asked for some time away from the club, which they were happy to grant given the horrific situation in Ukraine as Russia invades.

‘He’s not in a really good position, I’ve got to say. We’ve given him a few days off and it’s totally understandable,’ Moyes told a press conference on Friday.

‘The club have been very good, asked me to speak with him and if there’s anything we can do for him, we’ll certainly help him.

‘He’s asked me just now if he can have a few days off and I’ve granted him that.

‘It’s a real difficult time for him and his family and we respect that.’

Moyes did not confirm how long Yarmolenko will take off, with West Ham playing Southampton in the FA Cup on 2 March and back in Premier League action at Liverpool three days later.

Manchester City’s Ukrainian star Oleksandr Zinchenko has decided to play on despite the desperate time for his compatriots, with his manager Pep Guardiola praising his efforts in training.

‘It’s not easy at the moment but in the training session yesterday he was brilliant, so he’s ready to play in case he has to play,’ said Guardiola.

‘He’s worried. What would we feel if our country where we were born, we have family and friends is attacked, killing innocent people, how would you feel?

‘I guess that’s what he feels. Of course the team, the club is close to him unconditionally, of course.’
