Andre Onana will give Manchester United something that Pep Guardiola loves

It took just a few weeks for Pep Guardiola to decide Joe Hart wasn't good enough when he became Manchester City manager.

The goalkeeper couldn't convince Guardiola in pre-season and was dropped for the opening game of the Premier League season. He was loaned to Torino before the end of the transfer window and never made another appearance for the club.

Hart didn't have the skill set to align with Guardiola's possession-based philosophy and Ederson, a goalkeeper who is so comfortable with the ball at his feet that he could probably play outfield, was eventually signed for £35million.

Guardiola changed the Premier League in the subsequent years. The advantages of playing out from the back became clear and it soon became stylish to have a ball-playing goalkeeper, which brought a spotlight on the 'keepers who couldn't.

David de Gea remained world-class when Guardiola was appointed in 2016, but the game evolved and he stood still. He ultimately became a goalkeeper of the past and that's where Manchester United have decided to leave him.

It took Erik ten Hag a season, not just a few weeks, to decide De Gea wasn't good enough for his project. The 32-year-old departed on the expiry of his contract earlier this month following a string of indefensible and costly performances.

Although Guardiola was ruthless with Hart and Ten Hag was patient with De Gea, both goalkeepers met the same fate. It was the right decision to part ways with the Spaniard and his replacement couldn't be more different to him.
